- Dara Singh (Born Deedar Singh Randhawa on 19 Nov 1928, died 12 July 2012) was an Indian Pehelwan, Professional Wrestler, Actor, Director, Producer and Politician.
- Since an early age, Dara worked at the family fields and was encouraged to do Pehelwani, the Indian style of wrestling. He competed locally. Dara went to Singapore at the age of 19 for work and found work at a Drum Manufacturing factory and later as a security personnel.
- It was during this time that Dara started wrestling in Singapore and eventually won the title of Champion of Malaysia when he defeated Tarlok Singh on 14th April 1951 at the Baisakhi tournament organized by Indians living in Malaysia.
- This established his reputation and Singh started wrestling freestyle and switched to professional wrestling in the Singaporean circuit and traveled to India, Burma and Sri Lanka in the same year. In this duration, Singh won the Governor’s Challenge cup and Ajanta Cup matches.
- In 1952 Singh started getting movie offers from producers who had seen him wrestle and he did his first film Sangdil in 1952. Singh’s victory against
King Kong (Emile Czaya) was so famous that they were asked to shoot a pro-wrestling match for a tamil film Ponni in 1953.
- In 1954, Singh won Rustom-E-Hind tournament against Tiger Joginder Singh at Mumbai.
- His other titles include Champion of Commonwealth (1959) against George Gordienko, Rustom-e-Punjab (1966), World Champion (1968) against Lou Thesz.
- Later Dara also worked as a Pehelwani and Professional Wrestling Promoter.
- Dara’s famed match against King Kong in the early 50s also led to the movie King Kong in 1962 which was a super hit in India. They competed again on several occasions in India.
- As a wrestler Dara toured India, Japan, Singapore, England, America, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Canada, Burma, Australia etc.
- In popular culture, Dara is considered India’s first action star and india’s first sports icon.
- Dara established Punjab’s first film studio- Dara Studio in 1976.
