- Fox came from a wrestling family. His father was none other than former middleweight and lightweight champion of the world,
Charley Fox.
- The elder Fox inauguraited amateur wrestling in many schools in Cleveland.
- Hence, Billy had a start: he had inherited the stamina of his father, a good physique, the urge and the will to excel in sports, and a lot of the fundamental knowledge of leverages.
- With due credit to the Fox’s of Cleveland, amateur wrestling is one of the major sports in Ohio schools today.
- Billy attended law school but his heart was not in it. His Fox blood urged him to follow professionalism in the sports world reather than than to employ his guile in a court room.
- Football occupied most of his interest for some tme and he played pro for four years.
- All the while wrestling was in his heart and was coming to the fore and it wasn't with a heavy heart that he eventually, as wrestling became popular in Ohio, began in earnest. Within a short period of time Ohio coaches were beginning to believe that they had a worldbeater.
- At 155 pounds he practically mowed downed all competition in the northeastern championships of 1934. A year later he was 30 seconds away from securing a spot on the 1936 Olympics team headed for Berlin, by losing to fellow wrestler, Matheys.
- After this, it was back to the gyms for Billy before finally making his pro debut at the Cleveland Auditorium where heavyweights held their weekly card.
- To hone his skills, he went on a tour of the southern states. He returned home with the Southern States title.
- Fox enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1941, served with the First Marine Division and was in the initial landing at Guadalcanal and combat landing in Cape Gloucester, in New Britain, New Guinea, near Rabul, the Russell Island and Pelelieu.
- Leaving the Marine Corp as a Master Gunnery Sergeant, he returned to wrestling.
- During his career, he won the Junior Haveyweight title of the world and wrestled for charity with the help of his bear Gorgeous Gus.
- These are the words of the woman he loved, and in his words to her on an autographed picture - to his wife " To Billie Fox, A wonderful Gal with a wonderful name, from Billy Fox"
